Set some five years after the events in the original series, Read or dream tells the story of three paper users, Michelle Cheung, Maggie Mui and Anita King. Together they form the Three sisters detective agency (there are other stories of their exploits available in the manga of the same name).

Each of the girls have slightly different specialities, Anita is an expert matial artist, but not very good at defense, Maggie is good at using her paper for large things (particularly animals) and Michelle is good at fine control of her paper power (particularly making paper bows and arrows). All are sworn to protect each other.

After the all action first episode where the girls are introduced to a famous writer, the pace slows considerably, with a lot of character building episodes in which we get several hints that there is something going on. However, the real story gets underway around about episode 9-10, and the hunt for the elusive Yomiko Readman, who has been missing these last five years.

As the series goes on, the action hots up, with twists and turns coming every episode.

This is a series that lulls you into a false sense of security, then takes that security apart piece by piece, just when you feel you have a handle on what is happening, it twists and turns again. An excellent series.
